The first stage of the Visitor and Immigration Status Indication Technology (US VISIT) system was launched on January 5, 2004. When complete, US VISIT will record all entries and departures of nonimmigrants to and from the USA.
In this first phase, the system takes the fingerprints and digital photographs of certain nonimmigrants arriving at 115 airports and 14 seaports in the U.S. This biometric information is stored and checked against various government databases.
Nonimmigrants using the Visa Waiver Program are exempt from the US VISIT system.
